NHL rival alerts

Hockey is quick, loud and full of ways to have a bad night: the goal that goes in, the penalty that costs a game, the goalie who never comes back out. Hate Watch tells you about each one as it happens, for the NHL teams and players you track.

What you get alerts for

NHL alerts cover skaters, goalies and teams.

Sometimes the league's data posts a penalty before it names the call. Hate Watch sends the alert as posted and adds the call once it arrives.

Which ones buzz your phone

Push notifications by default include a goalie allowing a goal, a goalie being pulled, penalties, fights, ejections, misses in a shootout and a dead power play. Missed shots, a -3 night, empty-net goals and short-handed goals go to the feed without a buzz. Blocked shots, saved shots and giveaways are off until you want them. Change any of it in Settings, for the whole league or for one player.

When the game ends

When a team you track loses, you get the loss alert, with lines for how: they lost in overtime or a shootout, they blew a lead of two goals or more, they lost as a favorite, they were shut out, or they lost to a team with a much worse record. Lines can also say the power play went 0-for-4 or worse, or that a skater finished -3. An overtime loss does not count toward falling below .500, matching how the league counts points.

Picking a target

Bruins and Canadiens, Rangers and Islanders, Penguins and Flyers, Oilers and Flames: hockey rivalries run deep, and the Stanley Cup playoffs are the best time to have one. A goalie is a good target, because there is only one of them, and the alerts are about him. Search for a team or a player and tap Track.
